The Wildcats wasted no time making their mark Friday night, earning their first victory of the season with a 28–21 win over the visiting Eagles in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
From the opening whistle, the Wildcats played with energy and confidence. The defense set the tone early, forcing the Eagles to punt on their first two possessions while the offense gradually found its rhythm.
Quarterback Jake Miller led the way for the Wildcats, completing several key passes and adding a pair of rushing touchdowns. Running back Tyler Brooks also came up big, breaking free for a 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that gave the Wildcats a lead they would not surrender.
The Eagles continued to battle throughout the second half, cutting the Wildcats' lead to just one score late in the fourth quarter. With the game hanging in the balance, the Wildcats' defense stepped up once again, forcing a turnover with just minutes remaining.
That gave the Wildcats' offense an opportunity to run out the clock and secure the program's first win of the young season.
“This is a great group of kids, and they really believed in each other tonight,” Wildcats head coach Mark Davis said after the game. “We still have plenty to clean up, but getting that first win is something this team can be proud of.”
The victory sends the Wildcats into next week's matchup with plenty of momentum. Players and coaches alike know there is still a long season ahead, but Friday's performance provided an encouraging first step.
For a team looking to build something special, it was exactly the kind of start they were hoping for.
